"What kind of plant is hwatu's dung?"
Hwatu means a flower fight. To match this, various kinds of hwatu pad have plants on it, and the name of the hwatu pad is often also plant name. Peony, maple, sakura(cherry blossom), etc. But strangely, there are some names that are not plants, and one of them is "dung." This pad that reminds me of the toilet is actually a plant, do you know what kind of plant it is?
The hwatupae 'dung' is a paulownia. It is said that the name of 'Odong'(paulownia in korean), has changed to short and strong pronunciation. In comparison with the actual appearance, you can see that the black mass, which is often associated with something else because of its name, is a leaf, and the blue star resembling a bellflower is a flower of a paulownia, a small round, and a flower bud on a branch.
Like 'dung' by Hwatu, there are many interesting stories about plants. Like the story of Queen Seondeok, peony has no real scent, what is the national flower of North Korea, and the lotus flowers grow when planted lotus root bought at the supermarket. These stories are collected, compiled in the form of questions and answers, and the book <Conversations on Botany> contains plant details that observe and draw on the plant.

식물 문답 (독립출판물)
“화투의 똥은 어떤 식물일까요?”
화투(花鬪)는 꽃싸움이란 뜻입니다. 이에 걸맞게 여러 종류의 화투 패에는 식물이 그려져 있고, 또 패 이름 역시 식물명인 경우가 많습니다. 모란, 단풍, 사쿠라(왕벚나무) 등으로요. 그런데 이상하게도 식물이 아닌 이름이 몇 끼어 있는데, 그 중 하나는 '똥'입니다. 구릿한 '응아'가 생각나는 이 패도 사실 식물인데요, 혹시 어떤 식물인지 알고 계신가요?
화투패 ‘똥’은 오동나무입니다. 오동나무, 오동으로 부르던 것이 짧고 센 발음인 똥으로 변해버린 거라고 하네요. 실제모습과 비교해보면, 이름 때문에 다른 것으로 연상하곤 하는 검은 덩어리는 잎사귀이고, 도라지꽃을 닮은 파란색 별은 오동나무의 꽃, 작고 둥글며 가지에 달린 것은 꽃봉오리라는 걸 알 수 있습니다.
화투의 '똥'처럼, 식물에는 알고 보면 재미있는 이야기들이 많습니다. ‘못생긴 꽃’ 하면 떠올리는 할미꽃은 정말 아름답지 않은지 (사실 우리네 할머니를 생각하면 아름답지 않을 이유가 전혀 없지요), 선덕여왕 이야기처럼 모란은 정말 향기가 없는지, 그리고 가깝고도 먼 북한의 국화는 무엇인지, 마트에서 파는 연근을 심으면 연꽃이 자라는지ⵈ 이런 이야기들은 모아서 질문과 대답 형식으로 엮은 뒤, 해당 식물을 직접 관찰하고 그린 식물세밀화와 함께 담은 책이 <식물문답>입니다.
